Miley and Marc
Last month Marc Jacobs announced that Miley Cyrus would be the new face for his spring/summer ad campaign. After the formally known Hannah Montana’s risky performance at the MTV Video Music awards many are wondering why Jacobs has chosen Cyrus. “We all just love her and her entire being, her energy, her talent, her intelligence, everything,” Jacobs said in an interview. “There is nothing I don’t like about her. She is just genuine and very natural.” Up until becoming the new face of Marc Jacobs, Cyrus has often been seen wearing the designer on the red carpet, as well as, posing nude in last year’s “Protect the Skin You’re In” T-shirt campaign, to support the NYU Cancer Institute.
There were mixed options about Cyrus being the new face of Marc Jacobs after he tweeted that the pop star will be photographed by Britain’s David Sims instead of Juergen Teller, who has been the companies photographer since 1998 people became a little skeptical of whether or not Cyrus will be a good choice for the brand.
Critics believe that Jacobs is taking a chance with a celebrity endorsement. One can only wonder if Jacobs knows the risks of having a celebrity like Cyrus as the face of his company. He is taking the chance of Cyrus overshadowing his products and Cyrus may overexpose reducing her credibility, and with Cyrus you never know when she is about to hit the wall like a wrecking ball. Jacobs brand is already very expensive causing his target audience to already be very small. Having Cyrus may end up causing his very selective customers to not be receptive.
The picture above is one of the ads for the spring/ summer collection. In an interview Jacobs told WWD that he wanted his ad to be a beach scene with girls that were sulky and broody. Jacobs though it would be interesting if it was Miley and two girls who could be interpreted as Cyrus’ distant friends.
